a week ago I asked souls in the comfort spot to answer a quick survey that was needed in order for me to know what do you like and dislike about the comfort spot.

It was surprising to actually receive *hundreds* of replies and I read each and everyone of your comments. fascinating stuff! :)

I would like to address the main issues that you came up with:

1. private messaging

since the beginning of the comfort spot, I know that there must be a way for you to talk with each other in private. It sounded a little weird at first since the whole comfort spot is private but I saw you passing your emails and tumblr all around in order to find a way to speak. I want to give a solution for that and as with the nicknames feature, I don’t want to just give a quick default feature. I want it to support the great need of helping each other and giving support to the ones who need it.

I’m happy to say that I’ve already came up with a solution, but I will talk about it more when it’s ready :)

2. bugging ads

yes, I know, it’s annoying. I also don’t like the ads, but it’s the only way for me to maintain the project and since I don’t want you to pay for it, someone needs to.

I’m considering a premium account option that will let you pay a nominal fee for a clean version, but we’re not there yet and until then - try to enjoy them ;)

3. harmful people

as with every community, as we grow, bad people join too.

I’m trying to fight it with many ways and I also gave you control to flag the bad people when you see them. be sure that I’m always finding new ways to get you closer to the good souls and keep you away from the trolls.

4. “I wish more people would see this place”

well, me too :) and I’m doing the best I can to expose this place to as many people as I can, but it’s also up to you to share it among your friends and family, it’s the best way you can help spreading the word and also the best way to help your friends that needs comfort :)

5. not everyone receives help

a lot of you complained about that and I think it’s most exciting complain I’ve ever seen. It means that you really do want to help!

just for you to know, over 97% of the ask-for-comforts get an answer - that’s a *huge* number and even with that, I see that you can’t settle for less than 100%. and so do I!

In the future, unanswered ask-for-comforts will be pushed up the streams in order to help you find more souls that needs you.

I know, it sounds like such an obvious feature in a place where souls in our community are rapidly talking with each other. It’s a pretty default thing on our web, right?

wrong :)

as you know, the comfort spot does not reveal any details about the soul who ask for comfort but it’s content. when I designed the comfort spot, it was a major thing for me to maintain as I wanted people to stay focused on the content rather than the person who wrote it.

It doesn’t matter who you are, it’s matter that you need help.

the no nicknames decision was a huge gamble that worked pretty well.

I see you talking with each other and helping no matter who is typing on the other side. I’m thrilled to see this each and every day! :)

so why nicknames are added today?

well, as I learned over the years working and participating in many discussion groups on the web - In order to build a strong community and glue everyone together we need to inject some personality.

we are all humans, we connect with each other by similar characteristics. In the real world, it’s our clothes, shape and faces that makes the first impression. on the web there are images, language and names (real and fictional ones).

If you enter a room and you recognize the names of the other participants, you will instantly feel at home. It’s hard to feel at home if you don’t know anybody around and I want you to enter the comfort spot and feel like home. home where no one will judge you for who you are.

so I took the time to think about the balance between the need to drive people to help each other equally and the need to grow a strong community.

the solution that struck me was to leave things as they are today. You will enter the comfort spot and see the content. as today, you will see other souls asking for help. you will read the text and decide if you can help.

and now things become interesting - once you give your comfort, you will only then see the nicknames of soul who wrote the cry for help and the other commenters in this thread.

this will work on each thread separately. you will see nicknames only if you choose to participate.

that way, you will be driven to help by the content only, but you will stay because of the people around this ask-for-comfort.

over time you will recognize other souls and feel home. It will be like seeing a good friend on the street every time you help someone. It’s a double reward with a single help :)

the nicknames are optional. I won’t force you to use it.

you may choose a nickname and change it. you will also be able to choose if you want to use it each time you post something or comment.

I’m very excited (and a little bit afraid, I must admit) about this and would love to know what you think.
